June of 1996 was unique to me for two reasons: the birth of my first Flat-Coated Retriever, and the occurrence of a calendar Blue Moon. The luminous objects in the night sky have fascinated me since childhood, and it only seemed fitting that Eva should carry the glow of this special moon in her name. So, Clarenjoy’s Eva My Blue Moon came to live with me in the North Star State, Minnesota.

Eva’s early days involved swimming, rolling in the lush grass, and chasing unsuspecting butterflies. Her early nights were filled with stargazing. She used to sit with me on the rocky shore of the lake, her paws on my knees and her nose to the sky, while I told her all the stories of the constellations. Every night ended with me bending to whisper in her tiny ear, “And you, my Eva, will always be connected to the sky…for you were born in the month of a Blue Moon, and you are just as rare and special as one.”

In time, my puppy grew into an elegant and steadfast friend. Eva had moderate bone, a dense, flat coat, and she was an excellent mover. Although slow to mature, she accumulated all of her championship points in Minnesota, defeating specials for singles points at her debut show and also for her first major the second weekend out. She was raised in the lake country and always had access to fields, forests, and her favorite--water.

In addition to a pedigree that shows talent and longevity, Eva demonstrated a strong drive to retrieve, athleticism, trainability, and flare. In her "veteran" years, we enjoyed training for obedience and rally while managing the occasional field session (we would have done more of these if Eva had her way.) Eva was bred once in 2001, and her litter produced 9 beautiful puppies. For almost four years she was a loving mother to her son, Jay. More important than titles or progeny, Eva exemplified “companion”; she was loving, devoted, always cheerful, and had a sparkle that could not be missed. Eva and I were simply meant for each other, and I am comforted by knowing that I belonged to her as much as she belonged to me.

When I lost my golden retriever, April, to cancer in 1996, Eva filled a very empty spot in my heart; I truly needed her. I might have needed her a little too much, and I clung to the companionship that only a dog could give. I guess a part of me probably always will feel that way towards her. But over time, need was replaced by trust, loyalty, and love--Eva taught me how important these three things are to relationships, not only between humans and dogs, but between people as well. I've been asked how I know that friends should be greeted at the door warmly, kissed when they're not expecting it, or nuzzled when sad. My only reply is, "Eva was a good teacher."

In early autumn 2005, surrounded by love and in the presence of her family, my beautiful Eva went peacefully from this world. Eva had a wonderful life, full of the things that dogs enjoy. She was a tremendous friend, and although my heart longs for her company and affection, I will forever hold dear all the memories we made together. Eva always brought me joy, and no matter where our travels took us, we were at home as long as we were together. Although a very bright light went out in my life, her star shines on in heaven.

Eva and I started our journey together when I was only 17, and she carried me during some difficult stretches. Through many uncertain changes, she somehow delivered me safely to the present, the best time of my life.

Choosing a kennel name is a tricky process--some breeders base it on their own names, an interest they may have, or even the area that they live in. I based mine on Eva. The kennel name YAHTARIS is a combination of the American Indian name Yahto (blue) and the English name Amaris (child of the moon). I chose it because it ensures that every puppy I breed, no matter how many generations away, will carry the special legacy of Eva in its name. Eva was--and will always be--my friend, my foundation, and my forever "blue moon girl."
